Can you believe that 44% of women who exercise regularly do not wear sports bras? Most have never even tried one on and believe they do not need one. Women are spending huge amounts on gym memberships, smart fabric clothes and high performance sport shoes, but missing the most vital piece of exercise equipment - a sports bra.

The first sports bra was invented in 1977. Lisa Lindahl, after getting into the jogging, drew up a list of everything a perfect jogging bra needed: straps shouldn’t fall down, no poky hardware and should eliminate breast bounce. "Later, of course, I discovered that minimizing breast bounce was more realistic than eliminating it", Lisa admits. Finally, with the help of costume designer Polly Smith, she created the first Jogbra, by stitching two jockstraps together.

Investing in a well fitted sports bra, will help you avoid risking injury due to torn ligaments and even the back pain which you can suffer due to lack of a proper support. Breasts are mostly composed of fatty tissue and are supported mainly by skin and fragile ligaments called Coopers' ligaments. During exercise breasts are not only bouncing but also moving side to side and in and out. Because ligaments are not elastic, during repetitive or high impact sport the breasts bounce and pull on the ligaments, forcing them to stretch. Then the only solution would be an operation to restore them to former position. Cant’t believe it? Try bounce-o-meter

Choosing the right sports bra style for your body and your sport.
Things to remember when choosing the right one. It should be comfortable and supportive.

There are several different styles and sport specific bras like for running or outdoor activities available on the market. Most common sports bras are made from stretchable, breathable and absorbent fabric, which pulls moisture away from the skin and dries quick. They can open at the back to make it easier to put on and take off.
Sports bras can be classified in three major types: compression bras, encapsulated compression bras, and adjustable encapsulated compression bras. The compression bra is designed to minimize movement by pressing the chest flat as a single unit. Encapsulation bra has two separate cups that surrounds and supports each breast individually. These usually have hooks, zippers or other types of enclosures. Adjustable encapsulation bra is a merger of an encapsulation and a compression bra. These incorporate encapsulation, a wide adjustable band, and wide/rigid adjustable straps to create a custom fit and full support. A 2007 British study found that encapsulation bras are more effective than compression bras at reducing total breast motion during exercise because encapsulation bras reduce motion in all three dimensions (vertical, horizontal and width), while compression bras reduce motion only in width.

Your sports bras should fit as well as your everyday bra. Here are some tips on a good fit:
Find the right size
Measuring your band size:
  • Measurements should be taken without wearing a bra as this will give the most accurate measurement.
  • Using a tape measure, place the tape around your body, ensuring the tape is level around your back.
  • The tape should be firm but not tight against the body.

 Measuring your cup size:
  • Measure your breasts at their widest point - the nipple - taking the measuring tape all around your back.
  • Now deduct your final back measurement from this measurement. If the difference is five inches you are an A cup. For every inch in addition to this add an extra cup size.

Try it on! Get the size you think you need and then one smaller and one larger.
The band around the chest should be level front and back. It needs to be comfortable but firm. A good gauge to ensure that the underband fits well is being able to fit two fingers between the underband and your skin. Any more space and the band is too big and could cause friction.
The cup should contain the whole of the breast, with no creases and no cleavage on show.
The straps should be adjusted to fit securely on the shoulders with only one to two inch give.
Finally, do the bounce test! Jump up and down to check that you feel supported and secure! Wear the bra for few minutes to give hot spots and other fit issues time to develop.

You’re not at your best if you’re not wearing the right bra. Your perfectly fitted sports bra will provide you a lot of extra support so you can enjoy and concentrate more on exercise and surroundings!
